In a recent speech James O’Halloran, Deputy Commissioner, Superannuation, outlined the ATO’s current areas of focus in the SMSF sector. They include:

  • Compliance with the total super balance and transfer balance cap regimes

  • The use of reserves by SMSFs

  • The use of multiple SMSFs

  • Monitoring SMSF auditors

  • Using the SMSF registration process to review new SMSFs

  • Reviewing late lodging SMSFs

  • Reviewing the top 100 SMSFs by account balances
