Green Finance: An Australian Perspective

The Law Firm Network – Asia Pacific Conference 17-20 October 2024

Introduction

Green finance in Australia aims to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy while providing economic growth opportunities.

In recent years, climate and other sustainability factors are increasingly influencing the investment choices of retail investors, fund managers, and the lending decisions made by banks, as well as the policy settings of the Australian Commonwealth and State governments.

This paper provides a general summation of the development and current status of the developing green finance initiatives within Australia. It opens with a recap on the development of green finance, then discusses Australian government policy initiatives and regulator action, followed by private sector initiatives1 and concludes with a brief discussion of areas currently identified for future development.

It is hoped that a reader will be left with a general understanding of the current status and drivers of green finance within Australia.
