The ATO has announced the extension of the lodgment date for self managed superannuation fund (SMSF) annual returns for the 2016/17 year to 30 June 2018. Because 30 June 2018 falls on a Saturday, the ATO has confirmed the lodgment can occur on Monday 2 July 2018 without penalties.

Not only will this extend the lodgment period (a welcome relief for SMSF trustees and their advisors alike) but it will also extend the time in which SMSF trustees can make their transitional CGT relief cost base reset election to 2 July 2018.

The extension applies to all SMSFs not just those with 15 May 2018 lodgment dates (ie including those that had a 31 October 2017 lodgment date).
