Edward is a Special Counsel in the Business Law team at Sladen Legal.

Edward commenced his career as a graduate in the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and then as a lawyer within the ATO’s Tax Counsel Network and Review and Dispute Resolution business lines.

Edward has also worked in several large accounting and national law firms, enabling him to develop his command of prevalent tax and commercial issues that affect high-wealth individuals and small to medium enterprises.

With his experience in both private and public practice, Edward assists his clients in the following areas:

• Income tax, including:

  • Revenue versus capital treatment of income and expenses;

  • Capital gains tax (e.g. small business CGT concessions, CGT roll-overs, and exemptions such as for a main residence);  

  • Private company loans (Division 7A) and unpaid present entitlements;  

  • Individual and corporate tax residency;

  • Family trust elections, trust losses, and family trust distribution tax;

  • Employee share schemes and option plans;

  • Deceased estates and obligations of executors;

  • Anti-avoidance provisions (e.g. Part IVA).                                                           

• Obtaining private rulings from the ATO.

• Dispute resolution with revenue authorities and seeking remission of administrative penalties/interest.

• Drafting of tax effective commercial agreements and contracts.

• Trust law advice, including the review and variation of trust deeds as well as the preparation of trustee distribution minutes      

• GST                 

Edward is a Fellow of The Tax Institute (TTI) and a member of TTI’s National SME Tax Technical Committee.

Edward is also actively engaged with the University of Melbourne’s Law School, including as a tutor in BLAW20001 Principles of Company Law and BLAW30001 Taxation Law as well as a volunteer supervisor at the Tax Clinic.        

In 2024, Edward received the Tax Trailblazer Award at the TIA’s National Tax Summit, and has been listed in the 2025 of 2026 editions of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch for Tax Law and Commercial Law.
